What's Your FortificationWhat in your life fortifies you? When I say “fortification,” I’m not talking about a tough exterior in which nothing can hurt you. I’m not talking about walls so high and thick that you can’t let people into your world. I’m talking about a sense of fortification within yourself.


A sense of feeling solid about who you are and what you’re about.

A knowing that even though times will be tough (and they will for us all), you can survive it.

Just like a fort, you may get some nicks and bruises, but you can still stand tall and secure. When we feel guided by our values, coping skills and overall self-care (e.g. sleep, nutrition, movement, social life, pleasurable activities), we have direction and reassurance that we’re not going to be knocked over when the first strong wind comes.

Take inventory. Do you have a clear sense of what your values, coping skills and self-care are and where they stand in your life? Are they a force to be reckoned with, or are they in a weakened state?

The good news is that these can be bolstered at any time. It just takes some effort and practice to get them in condition.
